This is a Groupmuse Night Out

Sometimes we get a last minute offer that’s just too good to pass up. Good morning, it’s one of those times — this Sunday at Brooklyn’s iconic Roulette, we’re invited to join for Black Broadway: The Early Years.

If you love classical music, then you surely love Antonin Dvořák, who, as a Czech in the Austo-Hungarian Empire, knew what life was like at the margins. That’s partly why, when he was recruited (read: paid handsomely) to come to NYC for a spell to help cultivate a generation of authentically American composers, he so immediately identified with the black community and the transformationally powerful music it was creating. This relationship is one that would change music and this show tells that amazing story.

In Black Broadway, a 24-piece orchestra and guest vocalists Stacey Sherrell and Sailor Mayberry will perform Antonin Dvořák's eternally beloved and always thrilling American String Quartet intermixed with African American Spirituals, which inspired early Black Broadway composers, Dvořák, and multiple styles such as Gospel and Ragtime. Conductor and Music Director Tali Makell will present a multimedia video introducing the first act, focusing on Dvořák and the National Conservatory. Scholar and author Michael Dinwiddie will introduce the second act, focusing on early Black Broadway and featuring music by Will Marion Cook, James Reese Europe, Sissle & Blake.

We’ve got a limited stack of discounted tickets for $15 — but they won’t last, so make your move and join for this fascinating, breathtaking, and important evening.
