Bay Area legend Chelsea Wong will play a solo piano program featuring music by Maurice Ravel.
What's the music?
The War left a permanent mark on the creative culture throughout Europe. Artists busy making sense of the destruction left behind, often turns to modernism. Maurice Ravel, a composer who takes inspiration from the Renaissance and Baroque era, finds his own answer. Starting with Le Tombeau de Couperin, a suite he completed while serving on the front line of WWI, a comparison is then drawn between the innocent Valses Nobles et Sentimentales, and the waltz that end all waltzes, La Valse. Ravel's effortlessly sensual voice blends jazz harmonies with Baroque forms, infused with dazzling virtuosity, makes him one of the world's most beloved computers.
