The Oakland S.

One of the truly outstanding local music institutions is the East Bay’s own Oakland Symphony. Before the pandemic, we shared a lot of glorious evenings of their beautiful sounds at the iconic Paramount Theatre. Well, we’re back in business, with a night out for their season premiere, and we want you to be there!

This is a massive night for the Symphony — and for the cultural community in Oakland more generally — because it’s the official debut of conductor Kedrick Armstrong as the new Music Director of the Oakland Symphony. He’s a 30 year old musical powerhouse of color, stepping into the beautiful shoes that former director Michael Morgan filled for 30 years, until he passed in ‘21. This is the dawn of a hopeful new age for this wonderful organization, and we’re so grateful we’re invited along.

The evening is entitled “Inextinguishable Oakland” — and will feature three Jazz-rooted compositions by Allison Miller (modern jazz), John Santos (Afro-latin), and Meklit (Ethio-jazz) and will conclude with the monumental Inextinguishable Symphony by that great Dane Carl Nielsen. A thrilling, lush, and late romantic masterwork, it’s arguably the most dramatic piece Nielsen ever wrote. In the Oakland Symphony’s capable hands, it’ll humble, astound, and move you.

Come early for a pre-concert talk about the program with John Kendall Bailey , which begins at 7:05pm.

Tickets to this opening night are typically $40 or more, but we’ve got a stack of tickets for you for only $20 — fully half off. Supplies, however, are limited, so make your move!

And have an amazing Night Out!
