Host

I am thrilled to host pianist Dr Jeanne Hourez, who will be performing the repertoire of French female composers of the Belle-Epoque period. Female composers have been forgotten and erased from music history but with the efforts of several organizations, their music has been slowly revived in the past few years.

A native from France, Dr. Hourez has appeared as soloist with such orchestras as the Orchestre Symphonique de Cannes, the Orchestre Symphonique Azuréen and the Orchestre Philharmonique des Musiciens de Montréal and performs recitals in Europe, North America and Asia.

Jeanne has been a strong advocate for more inclusive music. She explores the repertoire of French female composers of the Belle-Époque period and 20th century. Her doctoral dissertation explores the interdisciplinary connections in Marguerite Canal’s music for piano.

An active and versatile chamber musician, Jeanne co-founded the Ensemble Benzaiten, the repertoire of which uniquely blends mandolin and piano. She is a very active performer in the Austin Area.

What's the music?

Mel Bonis (1858-1937): Legendary Women, excerpts
- Melisande
- Desdemona
- Ophelia
- Viviane

Lili Boulanger (1893-1918): 3 pieces for piano
- Of an Ancient Garden
- Of a Clear Garden
- Cortège (Parade)

Marguerite Canal (1890-1978): 3 Mediterranean Sketches
- The Gardens of Villa Cypris
- Play of the Sun on the Waves
- 'Spleen'

Marie Jaell (1846-1925): Impromptu

Nadia Boulanger (1887-1979): Vers la Vie Nouvelle (Towards the New Life)

I have been exploring the repertoire by women composers from several years and felt in love with these pieces. For a very long time, female composers have been forgotten and erased from music history but with the efforts of several organizations, their music has been slowly revived in the past few years. I am very happy to contribute to this important question by highlighting five French women from the Belle-Epoque.
