Where does this music come from?

The program, Past to Contemporary Connection, will be a presentation of how music written for the classical guitar has developed and changed throughout the centuries.

Today, being a time of change, contemplating the past and envisioning what lies ahead is more important than ever. With music, we can experience past cultures and times with sound and emotion. This guitar program will be a snippet of what that development sounds like.

The program begins with J.S. Bach, the infamous Baroque composer and his BWV 998 Prelude which was indicated to be written both for harpsichord and the lute. The second piece will delve into the Classical period where guitar music was not as popular as other instruments of the time. The next two pieces fall in the "Golden Age" of classical guitar music and demonstrate how the 6 strings of the guitar suited composition in the Romantic period. Afterward, we will hear music from the Modern Era with one of the most recognized guitar composers, Leo Brouwer. The concert will then end with pieces that were composed for Christopher Schoelen and are world premiers. The pieces were part of a composition call by VoxNovus and were selected by Christopher to be performed in NYC for the 15-Minutes-of-Fame contemporary music series. These are brand-new works; they will show how classical guitar repertoire is more often being composed by non-guitarists and how new sounds are being created with the 6 strings today.
