New music by some of the most exciting living composers. Quartet by Michael Gilbertson, Sundial by Samuel Adams, for String Quartet and Percussion, and a new work commissioned by Friction Quartet – hope and other things by Emma O'Halloran. This concert is curated by Doug Machiz.
Sundial by Samuel Adams will feature Haruka Fujii, a phenomenal percussionist. This piece is hypnotic and shimmery with undulating string textures and vibrant metallic sounds creating super cool difference tones. The experience will feel like being inside a prism filled with light.
Michael Gilbertson was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize after submitting his Quartet. This piece is a towering achievement filled with tenderness and exuberance.
Emma O'Halloran writes music with simple beauty and grace. "Hope and other things" is one of those pieces that provides a lovely palette for your thoughts – you can let it wash over you and get lost in a daydream, or you can investigate the beauty of the interlocking gestures.
