Where does this music come from?
Bach’s (1685-1750) music has been one of the main pillars of classical music, with most composers influenced by him in some shape or form. The 6 Sonatas and Partitas for violin are a collection of dances and arranged for the violin.
Ysaye (1858-1931) was a Belgian composer, conductor and violinist. He was inspired by Bach to write his own set of 6 sonatas, each for a different famed violinist of the time. With this set of sonatas he pushed the limits of violin playing and showed the instrument in a new light, both virtuosic and expressive.
Janacek (1854-1928) was a Czech composer who wrote his Sonata in 1917, partly as a response to WW1. He was inspired by Moravian and Slavic music to create an original and modern style. This sonata is in 4 movements, each with distinct characters.
I’ll finish with a couple of Ukrainian songs which sit close to my heart.
