Please join me and the George Crotty Trio in Washington Heights for an evening of jazz featuring Cello, Bass, and percussion. Musicians George Crotty, John Murchison, and Jeremy Smith will grace us with cinematic, pluralistic, and conversational music that draws on modal jazz, Indian raga, and Arabic maqam. The program will feature new compositions as well as selections from their 2nd album, "Chronotope" released in 2022.

Guest arrival begins at 7:00 pm with music to begin around 7:30 pm. Please note we will be taking our shoes off when entering the apartment. I'll provide light snacks. Please feel free to bring a bottle of something nice to share.

What's the music?

George Crotty Trio cello, bass, percussion

Often described as cinematic, pluralistic, and conversational, the George Crotty Trio's original repertoire draws on modal jazz, Indian raga, and Arabic maqam. The program will feature new compositions as well as selections from their 2nd album, "Chronotope" released in 2022.

Where does this music come from?

The cello may be more associated with classical music, but a select group of jazz cellists have proven that the instrument is much more than a niche or novelty in the world of jazz. In fact, the cello has been adopted into many musical traditions across the globe including traditional music from Scotland, Ireland, Egypt, and India.

Prominent jazz cellists include: Oscar Pettiford; Fred Katz; David Darling; Abdul Wadud; Erik Friedlander; Hank Roberts; and Tomeka Reid.
