“The Difference” is a new domestic thriller chamber opera by Lewis Patzner, about a couple that blackmails one of their employers, and the difference the money makes in their lives. Vocalists Victoria Fraser and Bradley Kynard, accompanied by the Town Quartet Collective, will also perform J.S. Bach's “Cantata Burlesque” BWV 212, a secular cantata that incorporates folk music of the time.
A chamber opera is a small scale piece of music designed for intimate spaces with no conductor. It's chamber music, but with a story and characters, and no talking, only singing. As a composer, I'm interested in engaging the audience with a multifaceted approach. While I write plenty of music that's music for music's sake, I do think there's value in incorporating different artistic disciplines, and opera has the potential to be all encompassing. A fully staged opera can have drama, poetry, set design, costume design, practical effects, and of course, music, and while this performance of "The Difference" will only be partially staged, it will still offer multiple angles of engagement for the average person.
