When a new invention in 1727 it knocked quite a few significant socks off. We are still probing the depths of that event. As the music still had to be written down using old symbols the new-ness of the sound has, for many people, remained elusive. But it's there for the hearing. Then, in 1917 when an altogether new tuning (equal-temperament) took hold the socks of Bela Bartok were, once again, knocked off. But this time we could read it, so different was it from any music that had pretended for almost 200 years to be well-behaved. Haydn and Clementi made the piano talk. Bartok made the new tuning ring. Come and get your socks knocked off.
What's the music?
Bartok: Slovak Folk Songs
Clementi: Sonata in B minor
Haydn: Sonata in C
