The Riverside Church presents a stunning program of some of J.S. Bach’s most well-known works for organ, chamber orchestra, and choir in celebration of his 338th birthday. One of the most influential composers throughout music history, J.S. Bach composed over 1,000 works, both sacred and secular, including cantatas, motets, oratorios, concertos, and fugues. Come experience a sampling of his of baroque masterpieces, including the Toccata and Fugue in D minor, BWV 565, the Brandenburg Concerto No. 4 in G major, BWV 1049, and the Magnificat in D major, BWV 243.
The Riverside Church organ, on which the iconic Toccata and Fugue will be played, is one of the largest pipe organs in the world. Designed in 1948 by Virgil Fox, then organist of the Riverside Church, it was built by the Aeolian-Skinner Organ Company of Boston, and dedicated in 1955 in concert with the New York Philharmonic conducted by Dimitri Mitropoulos. The organ was subsequently redesigned by succeeding organist Fred Swann and enlarged over a 30-year period by Curator of Organs Anthony Bufano, to become the magnificent instrument we know today. It currently comprises 149 stops, 207 ranks, and more than 12,000 pipes spread over ten divisions divided between the Chancel and Gallery. The main Chancel console is five-manuals, with a secondary four-manual console in the Gallery.
Tickets to hear this stunning and historic instrument in action are a mere $12 (and $7 for Supermusers). This price includes the post concert reception, which includes light refreshments and alcohol.
More information about the program, organ, and church can be found on the Riverside Church website.
Groupmuse ticket buyers are directed to pick up their tickets at a will call table in the entrance prior to the concert's beginning. Seating is first come, first served.
