Hello all! After a long delay, harp-viola duo Eleventh Hour (harpist Violetta Maria Norrie and violist Jay Julio) is re-presenting a program honed over the pandemic, now ready for a safe & in-person show! We're excited to invite you to join us over at our favorite Inwood coffee shop, Kuro Kirin, for an intimate night of duos!
We'll begin with a Viola Sonata by American composer and monumental figure in the NYC musical scene Ulysses Kay. This work, originally written for viola and piano, was one of our first transcription projects. It's always a joy to perform it and ensure its rightful place in the canon.
Following the Kay, we'll perform the deeply romantic Fantasy Sonata by Arnold Bax. Bax's writing is characterized by many as evocative of both the English countryside and of Celtic culture, which perhaps can be evidenced by his choice to write for viola and harp, two instruments championed by composers of each culture respectively. The Fantasy Sonata is the first well-known work for this combination, and if you haven't heard it before, it serves as testament to the possibilities of the instrumentation.
We'll also enjoy small bites and beverages of all sorts at the show. Come meet new friends and hear music for a rare but beautiful combination of instruments!
