Hosts
The Quaker Brooklyn Meeting House is hosting a groupmuse! Come join us and enjoy an afternoon of deep listening. The Quaker way of worship is a Meeting of people who seek the inner Light. We sit in silence - no minister leads us; no formal prayers are said nor hymns sung; no religious symbols are displayed.
Dancer Mio Ishikawa and violin-piano duo Impromptuo's program is inspired by the decentralized setup of the meeting room space. They will guide you through collective art making and listening. The pieces they will create together come from the techniques of Conduction by Butch Morris and Deep Listening by Pauline Oliveros.
*Please note that we do not allow alcohol inside the building, but please feel free to bring any kind of non-alcoholic beverages to share!
What's the music?
Deep Listening: the Tuning Meditation comes from Pauline Oliveros’s work. Predicated on the simple acts of listening, silence, and vocalizing, it is meditative and slow in nature, and the sounds of vocal drones are gorgeous. We will guide our audience through another work similar to this, possibly incorporating an aspect of movement.
Conduction: Butch Morris originally conceived this as a method for a conductor to guide an orchestra through massive improvisations. After demonstrating a few simple gestures, we will "conduct" our audience through a long-form improvised piece. Our collectively created piece will go through playful and harmonious vocalizations, clapping, tapping, simple movements, etc.
