Groupmuse, in partnership with Sonit Out and MÔTÔ Spirits, presents Voces: New Music from Latin America. Come for a wild afternoon of world premiere flute works by Latinx composers performed by rock flutist Emily Duncan. From bachata, to beatbox, to electronic piccolo, you’ve never heard the flute sound like this!

About the artists:

Flutist Emily Duncan is an electrifying, theatrical performer redefining what it means to be an artist in today’s musical landscape. Through innovative costuming, elements of drag performance, and music that blends the classical, pop, and electronic genres, Emily is creating new musical experiences that live at the intersection of music, technology, theater, and art. Recent performances include Maya Beiser and Ambient Orchestra’s “Bowie Cello Symphonic: Blackstar”, Barefoot Shakespeare’s Lady Capulet, and beatbox flute concerto “Native Tongues” with Press Start Orchestra.

Sonit Out is a nonprofit organization founded by Mexican composers Jonathan Figueroa and Axel Retif and motivated by the need to keep new music alive in difficult times. In 2020, to further their goal of fostering new music by Latin-American artists, Sonit Out partnered with composer Horacio Fernández Vázquez and flutist Emily Duncan to host a call for new flute works. Of the 20 composers from Mexico, Colombia, Nicaragua, Chile, Argentina, El Salvador, and Brazil who submitted their pieces, 4 were selected for this exciting new concert experience: Jamey Guzman, Rodrigo Martínez Torres, Gabriel Bolaños and Jean Angelus Pichardo. The richness of Latin American artistry is reflected in the great diversity of ideas throughout this program: the micro sound-world of the piccolo, flute as folktale narrator, and new techniques inspired by the vibrancy of Latin-American folk music and urban culture.

¡Salud!

Note: Alcoholic drinks will be sold by MÔTÔ Spirits at the entrance. No outside drinks permitted (this is not a BYOB event). Please enjoy this distillery's offerings to support this amazing local business!
