Holy Innocents, a cozy little wood-frame church, welcomes you to Fair Oaks Street, a charming alleyway nestled between the Mission District and Noe Valley.
"Songs my mother sang" is a program that explores the long history of the influence of folk- and popular-music on classical composers. Violinist Edwin Huizinga and pianist Ian Scarfe will be joined by special guest soprano Amy Foote for this special event.
The program will feature classical repertoire ranging from Bach and Bartok to Antonin Dvorak and Gustav Holst. The artists will also choose a selection of obscure and popular folk songs to blend in, including the "Willow Song" from Moore’s “The Ballad of Baby Doe”, the "Maples Lament" with a fiddle tune worked in, and "Silver Dagger", a powerful song made famous by Joan Baez.
What's the music?
Antonin Dvorak - “Songs my Mother Sang” from Gypsy Songs
Bela Bartok - Romanian Folk Dances
Vittorio Monti - Czardas
Gustav Holst - Four Songs for Voice and Violin
Folk Songs Arranged:
