Hey friends! We're so happy to share this performance capture of Beethoven's String Quartet in F Major, op. 59, no. 1, recorded in high definition during Festival Rolland's 2021 retreat. We’ll open with a chat about the piece’s background with esteemed musicologist, program annotator, and … my mom, Jane Vial Jaffe. See you there! — James
What's the music?
Ludwig van Beethoven: String Quartet in F Major, op. 59, no. 1
Beethoven’s titanic String Quartet Opus 59 No. 1 is the first of his middle period, which signified his breaking from classical norms and finding his own unique musical voice. A soaring opening movement is followed by a quirky scherzo (marked “always joking”), then a deeply profound and sorrowful 3rd movement. The piece finishes with an exuberant Russian theme which honors the
dedicatee of the Opus 59 quartets, Count Razumovsky.
