Hey friends! We're so happy to share this performance capture of Dvořák's epic Piano Quintet, recorded in high definition during Festival Rolland's 2021 retreat. At the top of the show is a chat with Jane Vial Jaffe, a musicologist, program annotator, and ... my mom :) See you there — James
What's the music?
Antonín Dvořák: Piano Quintet in A Major, op. 81
Dvorak’s Piano Quintet is a joyful and celebratory addition to the rich canon of Romantic piano quintets including those by Brahms, Schumann, Elgar, and Franck. Written at his summer retreat, as seems to be the case with many sunny works throughout history, Dvořák incorporates an endless stream of folk melodies and dances including a Dumka (Ukrainian lament) in movement 2, and Furiant (Bohemian folk dance) in movement 3. The outer movements show Dvořák's talent for crafting large musical narratives and rambunctious dances.
