Hallmark holiday or not, Valentine’s Day is an institution and it’s only weeks away. So if you don’t have plans for you and your beloved, relax my friend - Groupmuse has got you covered. The New Orchestra of Washington (aptly acronymized as NOW) is putting together a Valentine’s Day concert entitled A Poet’s Love: It’s Complicated, and they want us to join for a Night Out!
The first half of the program is one of Romantic giant Robert Schumann’s most beloved masterpieces - Dichterliebe or A Poet’s Love . It’s a song cycle of the most beautiful music, and offers probing insights into the pain, the joy, and the ambiguity of love. The words are written by German master Heinrich Heine.
The second half is a 21st century response — penned by contemporary composer Christian Jost, as he struggled with the loss of his wife. Jost’s Dictherliebe is for voice and 9 instruments and it deconstructs the very form of the song cycle in a most personal way. It’s a potent work, and taken with Schumann’s original inspiration, paints a profound picture of the many sides, joys, and pains of love.
Tickets typically run $50, but we’ve got a stack for $20! It’s limited though, so make your move! What’s more: though the concert starts at 8, you’re welcome to show up at 7.30 for wine and a dessert reception to make it a Valentine’s Day you’ll remember.
Have a great one!
