About
We are your friendly neighborhood opera company, bringing operatic and recital experiences directly to you. Whether it's on your stoop during the summer or indoors when it's too cold (or too hot) outside, we are here to create lasting memories through the power of music.
The Opera Next Door was born out of stoop concerts in Brooklyn during the pandemic summer of 2020. Founded by Colombian soprano Sasha Gutiérrez, our mission is to fill the gap left by the loss of live performances, particularly opera productions. As an independent opera company based in Brooklyn, we focus on fostering community through the magic of opera. We are passionate about this art form and believe that opera has the unique ability to unite communities through shared experiences.
Music
We offer a delightful mix of operatic arias, ensembles, and scenes, along with art songs in various languages and from different time periods. Our performances usually feature voice and piano, but sometimes we arrange for a chamber ensemble. Our repertoire covers everything from Baroque to Mozart, Puccini to modern composers, and all the favorites in between. You'll enjoy scenes from beloved operas like La Bohème, Così fan tutte, and Carmen, as well as art songs ranging from timeless classics like Schubert's Der Erlkönig to fun contemporary pieces like the Jabberwocky by Lee Hoiby.
We also love to highlight works by underrepresented composers from diverse backgrounds, making sure our performances reflect a rich tapestry of voices and stories, such as the Nahuatl songs by Salvador Moreno.
